I have to say that the only pictures which I remember are these from Nan Goldin. They show a woman who seems in each picture very differently.First she is so beautiful with a rouged face and looks like a happy girl but then when you go on looking at the series of pictures you see a woman who changed absolutly. She sits broken down on a chair, pale-faced and red-eyed. All the effect of alcohol and drugs. I think these pictures show the different sides of New York. On the one hand, the beauty and possibility to become famous and a good-looking person but on the other hand you see how fast someone can be delinquent and get in contact with drugs and alcohol in a city like New York.
Mr. Effing- Good man or a monster? December 17, 2007
In my opinion, Mr. Effing is neither only a good man nor a monster. He’s a mix of both.
Sometimes he likes to provoke Marco or to blame Mrs. Hume that she has stolen his money or other things. His behaviour is insufferable. He eats like an animal, he is always in bad temper, doesn’t say any single word and seems to be a depressiv old man.
But then there are days, when he shows emotions. He felt pity with Marco when he told that his mother died and he doesn’t know anything about his father. You either can recognize that Mr. Effing can love and isn’t as bad as he seems to, for example when he mentioned his old friend Pavel Shum.Besides, he can talk a lot and he can be happy about little things like it was when Marco went outside with him and he had to describe all in details.
Homework: Write a post about one song. Relate the text to the keywords about the American Dream October 8, 2007
I would like to say something about the song “God save the USA” by Pennywise and presented by Kathrin und Anke H.
I think the band have nerve to sing such negative things about the USA. A lot of people only mention the good aspects but in this case they show us how the inhabitants of America are played for a sucker.
I either like the way in which Pennywise sings about the USA. You are able
to relate to their opinion about America because they sing it ironically and in
this way it is often better to undestand how they think and what they criticise.
They make jokes upon the promised liberty and freedom in this land , which are also mentioned in the American Dream but in their opinion never come true.
Finally, I have to say that I think to sing a song is a great way to call attention to the circumstances and the failure of the policy in the USA.
Group work October 8, 2007
I prepared with Wiebke the song “Breakfast in America” by Supertramp.
Supertramp- Breakfast in America
Take a look at my girlfriend
Shes the only one I got
Not much of a girlfriend
Never seem to get a lot
Take a jumbo across the water
Like to see america
See the girls in california
Im hoping its going to come true
But theres not a lot I can do
Could we have kippers for breakfast
Mummy dear, mummy dear
They got to have em in texas
Cos everyones a millionaire
Im a winner, Im a sinner
Do you want my autograph
Im a loser, what a joker
Im playing my jokes upon you
While theres nothing better to do
Dont you look at my girlfriend
Shes the only one I got
Not much of a girlfriend
Never seem to get a lot
Take a jumbo cross the water
Like to see america
See the girls in california
Im hoping its going to come true
But theres not a lot I can do
We compared this song with a newer version by Gym Class Heroes.
